Driveshaft is out. I'm having trouble getting the U joint out now. What are my options without getting a U joint tool?
never changed a u joint in a vette but every u joint I ever replaced one side has the bolt on connector and the other side I always used a punch and hammer. Might not be correct but it worked for me. getting them back in can be tricky but they should go in alright.
Your throwing the old one away anyway, right, so banging it out shouldn't be a problem.

Like I said in your other thread - the ball joint press that looks like a C clamp.
You can "rent" one from most major suppliers like autozone if you don't have a Harbor Freight nearby.
If you decide not to use a u joint press or the vice and socket method......Be careful with the hammer and wail away method....
your driveshaft is aluminum and its easy to deform...it would really suck if you smack the shaft and can't install a new u joint.
Most of the big box autoparts stores have the ujoint press in their tool loaner programs !
Mike
parts stores looked at me like I was a Ra-tard when I asked for something to remove my U joints.
I got it done, anyway. It took like, 9 hours of off and on work. But, new ones are installed on the drive shaft. Tragically, the strange noise is still present, so I assume it's a half shaft.
Befor eyou go and pull your halfshafts, jack both wheels off the ground and turn your drive terrain and see if you can find the noise.
Shake your halfshafts if you have no play they should be OK.
What knid of noise are you getting ??? Let the guy's on this forum help your troubleshoot your ploblem.
Is it a slight grinding noise??
It sounds like you spent 9 hrs replacing a part that didn't need it.
It's a sound reminiscent of a child's bicycle with a baseball card in the spokes, most of the time. Sometimes, it's more of a knocking sound. It's present while coasting, but much more pronounced under load.
I would say again put the rear up on jacks.
You can check everything from there.
I'm not shure but could it be something in the rearend
Check your wheel bearing while you there grabing top and bottom of wheel, you should feel no or very little movement.
pull the wheels and check the halfshafts then also.

Can you feel it or just here it?
You have to track down the issue. Guessing won't fix anything but the parts man's wallet.
Az, jack the car up and put jack stands under the suspension so that the wheels aren't hanging (puts flame suit on for that comment). Now roll the thing.
You'll have to use possible 4th gear to get it rolling fast while the motor is at Idle. Once it is there, you can go under and see/hear the noise. If you have a long screwdriver, you can put it to a (non moving) component and then put your ear to the handle....you'll hear the noise very well if and you can track it down to where it is the loudest.
