The antenna wiring goes through a large rubber grommet. You need to get the grommet out of body.
This is based on my 86 experience.

There is a braidded copper grounding wire that needs to be disconnected also, have you done that? The antena wire will come out, but you must go inside the hatch (on thre inner fender)and push the rubber gromet out as well. Good luck

I had good luck with removing the 2 left tail lamp assemblies. That gave me easy access to everything including the large rubber grommet.

never mind I drilled out the plastic rivets, took the motor apart and ended up breaking the gears prying them out.
Then I figures out how it worked.
That sucks I screwed up the gears now I need a whole new motor and mast.
Now that I see how it work it would have been easy if I wouldn't have broken it.
i put it back together sfter snipping the ribbon off.I am going to just leave the antenna down or I can pull it up manually

Thanks anyways guys

Man I wish I would have seen this sooner.
You should have just unplugged the motor. Then you can cut the wires close to the old one. Then cut the wires near the plug on new one and splice together. Thats what I did and it worked fine. No need to pull out the grommet or the plug side.

When you removed the tailights were you able to uscrew the antenna from the top? The part that holds it on to the body.
I took my whole rear wheel off. Was wondering if when you took the tailights off you could reach in and unscrew that part.
