I decided to tackle the U joint replacement on my 94 manual. Got the drive shaft out. Rented a U Joint removal tool. Took out clips and pressed the U Joint as far as it will go. Body of U joint is up against inside of the yoke but it is not far enough for the bearing cup to clear. The cup is still tight in the yoke. I tried to grab the cup with large pliers to see if I could get it out but it is stuck tight.
Yup, very typical experience.....I've changed mine twice and this happened both times.
Spray the cup that's part way out with PB Blaster and let soak a while.
I then put the driveshaft in my bench vice and use a pair of vicegrrips on the end of the bearing cup and twist.
It should come out after a little persuasion
The steel bearing cups and aluminum yokes tend to corrode over time due to the aluminum/steel galvanic reaction between the different metals and that makes them difficult to remove.
