Can somebody please post a pic of a correctly installed fuel pump in an 89 Vette? I guess I put it in wrong because it's making a lot of noise that it didn't before. I know I got the bottom in right (I think), but not exactly sure about the top. It runs, but too much vibration that it didn't have before. Thanks, Jim
What happened is I bought a fuel sending unit from an 85, and found out it was diff. Unfortunately, I had already taken the fuel pump out of my 89 unit, and then discovered things didn't line up, so put mine back together an bingo, loud vibe. Took it out again and didn't have it seated correctly, fixed that, reinstalled. Now it's not as loud as it was, but louder than originally was.
UPDATE: It's working fine now. It must have vibrated itself into place. I usually don't have that kind of luck. Thanks for all the imput, with the exception of coupeguy2001. (just kidding)
Sometimes there's a rubber boot that slides over the f. pump body.
Yes, I've got that on there, and I've got the rubber bottom piece in place, I'm just not sure about the top part where there's a connector. I'm thinking of putting a couple of tie wraps around it, but really don"t want to mickey mouse it. It didn't make this noise before, so I'm sure it's MY human error.
Sorry I don't have a picture, is there a hose or pulsator that connects the pumps outlet to the sending unit? If you think the noise is the pump vibrating than you can use a hose clamp to tie tight to the return line. Or do you think it maybe a defective pump? I've seen that too. Some manufacturers may have louder pumps but still pass their QC standards.
Is is just a louder humming noise?
Does it provide good fuel pressure and hold pressure when turned off?
What do you mean by loud humming noise? There aren't too many ways these things can be put in.
The pump is wrapped in a boot, then it sits down in the bottom that also has a rubbertype seat. On the bottom of that is what we refer to as the sock but it is just another filter actually. It then hooks to either a pulsator or a coupling hose from the top of the pump to the line.
I have heard of some people putting a zip tie or something around them but mine didn't have anything like that so I just put it together and called it a day. I don't see how that could deaden any sound anyway.
If you set it up like this it could be one of a couple things. You bought a bad pump, or it just seems louder because yours was crap.

Yes, louder humming noise. When I turn the key off, I can hear it build up pressure for a few seconds, then stop. I think that's normal, but I never could hear it as loud as now.

I think it's where I hooked it up to that coupler or pulsator thing is where the problem is. There is a rubber thing there and I might not have it in the right place, might be on the wrong side. I have it oppisite the elec. conn. I dunno.
That's why I'd like a pic.
Do you have a pulsator or coupling hose? If you have a pulsator get rid of it and put in a coupling hose in it's place. You will need about 4 to 6 inches, at the very most of submersible hose and a couple clamps. just put the hose on the top of the outlet of the pump and connect it to the fuel line.
If you have a coupling hose go ahead and replace it. Yours may be cracked somewhere not allowing a good flow of fuel and making your pump work harder. Also go ahead and replace the filter (sock) on the bottom of the fuel pump. It could be clogged and not allowing a good flow which will also make your pump work harder. These ar all cheap easy possible solutions, although the submersible hose is about 26 bucks a foot. If you want PM me and I will send you enough to do the fix. I have some left over from when I replaced my pump a couple weeks ago.
If it's none of the above your pump may just be on the way out. They get noisy sometimes when they are about to go kaput.
