Guys, I'm wrestling w/the new Richmond pinion for a 3.54 set, and I've not been able to lower the pinion drag to less than 35 in-lbs.
Starting w/.030", If I take out shim thickness, it turns harder...If I add shim thickness, yep! It turns harder! (say ~50 in-lbs)
She's got me stumped.
Bearings are new, cleaned w/CRC and then lubed w/30wt.
NO seals in place.
Is there a gear Doc in the house?
Outer races are pressed in, and appear to be seated OK.
im going to guess that you dont have the carrier in the case and your trying to set the pinion pre-load?did you drive out the old races and find the shims behind them and put them in behind the new races?
The insights do help!
What I found was that the shim value, was far greater for the Richmond, than the GM pinion. It took over .100" before any clearance was offered. Once the nominal value (.102") was reached, then it began to loosen up.
Day broke over Marble-head! Slow learner.
thats why i always buy yukon gears from randys ring and pinion.8 out of 10 times they set up perfect with the same shims, even when i jumped from 2.59 to 3.73.
