Default Tranny Speed Sensor Question

I can find replacement speed sensor for a 6-speed... but cannot find one for an automatic. Is there a difference? The photo on Eckler's shows exactly what is currently in my 91.

I have a 1990 auto. I went from 2:73 to 3:54 gears. I changed the plastic drive and driven gears per the reqd tooth ratios. When it came to the VSS on the side of the tranny the fun began. I found out thru research that each year had two different ones. For 2:59 and 2:73 had the same VSS (it works on 35-39 Tooth driven gears) and the 2nd one to my surprise went from 3:07 to 3:73 (it works on 40-45 Tooth driven gears). The 3:07 has a 42T and my 3:54 has a 43T. I was surprised that the 3:45 gears in a 6 speed used the same VSS. I found a used VSS for the 40-45T but many on the forum stated that with my original one ; I just had to turn it 180* for the proper offset for the larger driven gear.
For your 1991; did you change gearing in the rear end? If so; just check the corresponding p/n's and naturally will have to change the plastic drive and driven gears also for proper speedo accuracy.

I appriciate the input, guys. I've only had the car a few months so if the previous owner changed the rear end gear, I wouldn't know. I believe it's orginal though.

I'm not sure how to tell the 2 series from the 3 series, James.

WOW, with tons of info on the internet... I found the RPO Codes and verifed on the plate in the glove box. Factory: D8K which is the 10456091 Speed Sensor and GM1 is a 2.59 rear axle ratio. Thanks again for your help, guys!

With the auto; you have only 2 choices...2:59 gears (2 series) or the performance axle..3:07 gears(3 series). The 2.73 gears(2 series) only came with the Vert.
You would have to check your RPO codes and list here to determine axle ratio...located on sticker under your center consul armrest lid.I believe there is info on RPO codes here..just cant remember where.
