Any one Program Their Own Chip - Help!!
Ok, I have a OBD1 from a 90' Vette. I am putting the intake system on a 355SBC that has been slightly worked and has a nice new cam.
I am not sure if I should buy what's needed to program my own chip or just have some one else do it.
Has any one done it themselves and if so what products did you use? And how hard is it to do?
Would there be a benefit to me doing it myself compared to some one else doing it for me?

If you decide to do your own , have two options.
1.Buy the Moates Ostrich ($175 ) and you can tune in real time from your laptop in car.Run tuning program ( TunerPro RT ) make changes to tune and upload to the computer.Drive off

2.Buy the Moates Burn II unit and a chip adapter. Can make same changes as above but must R/R the Eprom (chip ) from the engine computer everytime you want to make a change

I've seen Moates site. So if I understand you correctly, the first option allows me to tune in real time. Does that mean the chip stays in the ECU and it reprograms it as needed? And for the cost of the device as well as cables and software, is it worth it? Once dialed in I am not looking to figit with it since it's just going to be a cruising car. I am not racing the car.

Doing it is easy , getting your head around what to do is a steep learning curve as far as tuning goes.
If you decide to do your own , have two options.

... Especially with the part about getting your head around the tuning parameters ..... I am using the Moates Auto-Prom and really like it ... it has real time emulating capabilities and is fairly easy to use ... there was recently one for sale on Thirdgen.org for $300 ... The mail order guys will consume $300 in no time but the worst part is the down time waiting for them to make changes and return your chip ... every car is different as is the environment that its driven in ... DIY is the way to go !

I am sorry guys but please lets go through this as if I was 4yrs old. I need software. Which one should I buy. Now once the software is loaded into my laptop, I am to connect my laptop to the ostrich which will then get connected to the existing ECU. If this is all correct, then do I need a new chip also?
