This does not happen all the time but when it does I am braking to a stop. I begin to hear a clunking sound coming from the rear driver side wheel. The rate of clunk seems to be fast and then slows down as I come to a complete stop. You would think you had picked up a huge nail in the tire and that is what it sounds like. I have a 92 6-speed.
Thanks
It sounds like either a rear wheel bearing or u-joint. Jack up the back end and grab your tires at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Alternating, push with one hand and pull with the other. There should be no movement( like a very solid feeling)..movement usually indicates a bad wheel bearing. You can check the u-joints too if you have it safely supported by applying pressure at the joint by hand to see if there is any free play or using a large screwdriver (very carefully) to apply pressure at the trunion on the joint to see if is flexing.
Good Luck
I had a similar post recently, however my clunk begins from the start of the driver side rear tire rotating until about 50 mph. I don't recall it happening during braking.
The majority of everyone who read my post suggested either the u-joint and/or bearings. I determined it was beyond my ability to work on (time and material resources) so I took it to a shop. They confirmed the u-joints, but were not sure how severe the problem was (did it impact anything else).
Since I needed a new Y-pipe installed and muffler eliminators, I told them to get started on it and finish up with the exhaust. I should have the car back at the end of this week (if all goes well). As soon as I have more information back I'll let you know what all happened.
