Probably a silly question, but what type of fire extinguisher should I use? Just a standard Kidde "BC" (grease/liquid/electrical)? Where is the best place to mount it? I was thinking directly in front of (under) the drivers seat, but is that best? I'd like to avoid mounting it in plain sight, as that strikes me as rather ricer-ish.....
I have some experience driving race cars on and off road. I prefer to have them mounted within a normal arms reach but far enough that my body does not bump in to it during any racing activities. Below the seat under my thighs is a preferred place. Just make sure that you can get to it easily in the event of a fire. Also practice using it before any serious events. you might want to make sure that it is also secured properly to prevent it becoming a missile during a collission. I am with you, it looks tacky being in clear view on a street use vehicle.
I have one and mounted directly on the plastic frame of the passenger seat below ones knees. I think it would be easier to get to than threading it out from beneath my own legs and steering wheel.
Hardly noticable unless you look straight down at it.
Forgive me for forgetting to add that my real preference is Halon. however,I understand that it is not available for racers any more. Some of us are using an ABC rated dry chemical extinguisher these days. Just do not release the chemical in to your helmet, I once breathed the chemical and nearly suffocated. Since then, I practice holding my breath when expending the contents of the extinguisher and exiting the vehicle. I assure you that it is a scary experience. But frequent practice can save your life. Good Luck!
I just bought a halon system from Truechoice. I made a bracket out of 4" dia. ABS plastic and set it into the storage bin behind the driver's seat. I plumbed the lines to the cockpit and engine compartment. It has an actuator head that is activated by a switch. Yeah, it's basically a racecar, but even if it weren't, I like the "stealth" mode, without all kinds of things exposed.
By the way, the chemical that is replacing halon is called "coldfire". It's pretty expensive. ABC extinguishers will make a complete mess of the interior car if (God forbid) you ever have to discharge it. You can still find some halon extinguishers out there if you look around.
Thanks EPA for taking away yet another superior product.
I guess we really do have the most intelligent drivers out there. I was not aware that there was a replacement for Halon. I too thank the EPA for taking away Halon. Good Luck!
