does anyone have any trouble when there gets wet by rain
or a car wash where u turn the key and besides the lights coming on
theres nothing.
no response at all
then u wait ten minutes and it starts up perfectly. prob cause it dried.
water in distributor? ignition misfire?
any help thanks
93 vette
when you say, "there's nothing, no response at all", do you mean the engine doesn't turn over? if that's the case, i'd start looking at the electrical connections from the battery to the starter, and all associated grounds. if the engines turns over, the first thing i'd start looking at would be the plug wires.
This sound like a VATS related problem especially when you say you wait 2 minutes which is about the time out re-set of VATS. Start out cleaning the pellet (resistor) contacts on the key with alcohol. Sometimes using a eraser if it is real dirty followed up by the alcohol.
You can also try another key and see how that works. I would actual like to measure the resistance of the two keys side by side to see if the possible problem key has a problem with the pellet.

This doesn't sound like its caused by water,if it was water related it probably wouldn't correct itself in 2 minites, maybe its just a quincidence that it happened at the same time.Id say look at VATS also..WW

good point. didn't think of the VATS. the day bought my 90, when i went to start the car after the first stop from the dealers lot -- NOTHING. after a couple minutes of cussing and presto - no problem. haven't had a problem since...
You can find out if it's a Vats problem by pulling the codes.
If it is VATS, you'll get codes in module 1.1 of 51, 52, 53, 54, 61, 62, 63
Many times you'll get a 51 - Pass Key Error
As said, try cleaning the key.
Also common on 92-93 is the ignition switch, see if it's slightly pushed out of the column like 1/16th to 1/8 in.
If some of your reminder bells aren't chiming, it may be the switch.
GM spec for the Pass Ke Timeout is "approximately 3 minutes". If you try and start the car before that time, all you do is reset the timer.
Disconnecting the battery will not disable the timer.
On mine, the 3 minute timer is more like 8 minutes..

That sounds about right for vats, does it one time then nothing for a while, then it shows up again..But it usually starts getting more frequent, then one day, nothing period...If it turns out to definitely be vats you can either get the wiring harness that goes in under the steering column to eliminate it, or you can have it deleted from your chip. Both work but the wiring fix is cheaper...WW
Hey I had the same exact problem with my 84 vette about 3 months ago, Parked the car at a local publix, ran in & grabbed a 6 pack, Got back to the car & went to start it & nothing at all, Lights worked great, radio came on but turn the key and not a peep..
I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, reconnected it & still nothing, Tried tapping on the starter & still nothing... So I figured I'd try to push start it & it cranked right up ( Manual Trans), First try... Everything worked as it should, got it home b-4 shutting it off again, & would ya know it cranked right back up.. Has not happened since, I do not know what caused it ....

$85.00 for the Ignition and you have to have the key recoaded to the tumblers.
where do u get this wiring harness u talking about ?
To use these you have to know which number your key is , if you don't know go to a GM dealer and they have a machine that will measure the resistance on your key for you...WW

$25 is decent for that harness. You can also build the bypass for $5 worth of parts.
You can find out what your key code is with an ohm meter, the values are in the FSM.
BUT, this or replacing the switch shouldn't be done without first pulling the codes.
Or you can do what I did .I bought the cylender and removed the panel under the steering wheel ,in the center are the 2 white wires with an orange coating .I disconected the wires plugged in the new cylender and put the key in the ign and another key for the car in the new cylender and turned the ign on and the car started. This is the easy way of checking to see if the ign cyl needs to be replaced, then the work begins. You have to disconect the battery of 30 minutes and remove the air bag and take the collum apart and install the new key cylender.
Pull the codes.

I had this problem on a brand F truck. Turned out to be a bad wiring connector at the starter. Good luck.
