I'm reading the Helm and there are 2 (14,15) codes for coolant temp. If you have a scan tool it would be easier to diagnose the problem b/c the first test on both codes is to hook up a scan tool. You changed sensors already so after that would be to check for a short in the yellow wire, open sensor ground circiut, faulty connection at ECM or faulty ECM. HTH a little.
this car is driving me nuts i tried all of the above things but it still comes on
engine temp is 175 to 185 does not run hot and thermo is opening and closing any ideas i am lost need help.

I have the same problem on my 87. I read an artical a while back that listed about 10 common causes for this problem. I finally got tired of chaseing the problem and just ignore the light as it comes and goes. :cuss
I had the same problem too. On mines, I noticed that the light came on when the temp reached the thermostat temp. The coolant wasn't being pulled from the overflow tank. What I did was put some of that Bar's Leak Radiator leak sealing powder in and the problem went away.
My '87 light used to go on/off, I made sure the overflow tank was at least half full, it replaced the level in the radiator as fluid is circulated in the engine. Light went off.
