Okay, I've had this problem twice now. The OD relay connector on my car had a bunch of electrical tape wrapped around it when I bought the car 8 years ago. Looked bad on an otherwise nice car, so I peeled it all off and discovered the insulation on wires had shrunk back away from the connector.
They didn't seem to be contacting one another so I left it until I could find a better solution than tape. Immediately the OD started getting flakey. Wouldn't shift until the car was completely warmed up or would suddenly stop shifting. Reapplied the tape aroudn all conductors and problem went away. Recently some of the tape came loose and same OD problems started happening. Reapplied the tape, problem gone.
Is there a good permanent fix to this problem? Is it possible to push the connectors out of the plug body and somehow slide shrink tubing over the bare wire? Or is there a better solution?

Yes the pins can be removed, and heat shrink is the best way to fix this problem for good. That's what I did. I think I used a small jeweler's flat tip screwdriver to depress the prong that keeps the connector pins from pulling out. That or part of the connector end flips up after you disengage some side tabs, allowing the removal of the pins. I can't remember how this particular connector was.
