Default Front Spring Removal for Lowering Project

I've been looking into installing a lowering kit. I've seen threads regarding replacement of the wedges, etc. Where I'm stuck is how to get the front spring out. The FSM says you need a special spring compression tool that I obviously don't have. How have you guys done it?

First off, get the front of the car as high as you can, you'll need to do that for the spring to be removed. You'll have to remove the lower control arm on one side. Use a floor jack to hold the spring pressure while you remove the lower ball joint then the control arm. Swing the hub out of the way and support it on something like a 5 gal bucket. Remove the brackets that hold the spring in place in the center. Then you can slide the spring out. You'll have to wiggle and twist it a lot to remove it.

In this link there is the best write up on C4 lowering. It's been on here several times. The 4th link down from the top. Maybe you've seen it already. I'd post it here but it's a Microsoft Word DOC file and I don't know how to do that and get the pictures in there. Perhaps someone else will know.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I might have to try this. Looks like as long as I'm in there new ball joints and tie rods would be a good idea.

one other note: you don't actually have to remove the spring, you can slide it out part ways on each side to access the wedges. That means you don't have to get the car so high in the air. Worked for me.

Thanks. I'll see if that works before pulling it out. Mine is a Z51, so the spring is supposed to be a little easier to get out (not as much curve).

Kevin was a great help, when I lowered mine.

Jack one side of the car higher than the other. Then you don't need the car sky high to remove the spring.

details?

the reason I wanted a shop to do it, is that I wanted them to use a lift.

but it's taking FOREVER to get it in there

all the parts are here, I want to get my coilovers on.

Don't have to remove the lower control arm it will swing down out of the way, although it will probably take some force the first time, mine did. You shouldn't have much trouble at all with a z51 spring, not much curve to it at all. Probably will have to remove it though to do a good job removing the stock rubber and putting the new on. I recommend removing the rubber on the ends as well. You'll probably spend more time removing the old rubber and gluing on the new than you do removing and reinstalling the spring.

Not much in the way of details. Just jack one side of the car about 6" higher than the other side. On mine, I'd guess that the drivers side was ~12" in the air and the passenger side was ~18". The base suspension 1996 springs have the most curvature of any yeat and I was able to remove mine without issue...and replace with with a '90 Z51 spring from Hyperco

For the rear, no need to do anything fancy. Remove a bolts and it falls right off.

Thanks 86. This is why I love the forum. You don't get these tricks out of a shop manual. What did you use to glue the wedges to the spring? I'm thinking 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

Are the metal brackets that are around the rubber pieces that are cut-off....are they reused with the wedges?

The later years (88-Up) reuse the aluminum brackets. They can be trimmed to match the height of the new wedge. The early models have steel brackets that need to be replaced.
