Default Taking the cats off????

Well I have a 94 c4 with the Billy Boat exhaust and an x-pipe. Before the x pipe I had straight pipes and in my opinion sounded much deeper and rougher. Now it has a smoother raspier tone. But I want it to be louder. Would taking the cats off make it louder? And what needs to be done? Just cut them out and replace the piping? Any muffler shop should be able to do this right? One muffler shop said i needed delete pipes and another said they would make them and charge me about 150 for everything. Is that about right?

The stock cats are like mufflers! Taking them out would definitely make the car louder!

I would be careful though and think ahead. If you have emissions in your state inspection then you will fail without cats. Additionally, no cats will trigger a check engine light (possibly but not completely sure with a 94) and you may have to run O2 sensor simulators.

Finally, the cats are bolt on and the shop should just make pipes to replace the cat that bolt onto your manifold and existing exhaust pipes! Make sure the shop will do the work because a lot of times they wont take the chance with replacing cats with straight pipes.

I was actually thinking of doing this myself for my 96! It would make the exhaust louder and free up some hp and tq from the restrictive cats! I just dont get the whole o2 sensor simulator thing...

Let me know how it goes!

In the great state of florida there are no emission testing. Lol but I don't like engine lights. I have to look into it. Hopefully I won't need those sensors cause that's more money and I hate spending money on crap that does nothing but switch off a light.ill let you know anybody know about the check engine light?

Well the driver's side cat on my 95 has one o2 sensor and the passenger side cat has two o2 sensors. The car runs like poop when one of the sensors fails.

There are no emissions testing here and I have no desire to remove my cats currently but would eventually if one failed. I'd also like to know how to bypass the o2 sensors either through programming the ECM (which I can do) or some other method. Especially since my driver's side o2 sensor seems to fail every 2 years according to my experience and the previous owner and the service records I have for my car.

Give the air we breathe a break. I use Exotic Muscle Lts and Random Tech Bullet Cats.

Check with Cunningham for Blowers.

My guess is that you are under 25.

The difference between stock and hi-flow cats is NOTICEABLE, without cats you will be VERY LOUD.

ah?

I see.... I would consider hi-flow cats...but due to the fact that I am under 25 and paying for an education I cannot afford them. I consider myself very green and conscious about the deteriorating environment we live in. Maybe you have trickled some sense in me. I just want my car to be LOUDER its just I get selfish sometimes and need people that are over 25 to knock some sense into me. Where can I get affordable hi-flow cats?

I assume the Billy Boat has mufflers on it? If you want it loud take them out. In fact, sell the whole set up and have money for more mods. I had stock cats, x-pipe, and muff. elims on a 94 and it was hideously loud and got lots of attention. I also lost a lot of torque at lower rpms which sucked. I put a stock resonator back on in place of the X and it sounded perfect for me. That's the setup I have on my 96 too now. It's cheap and effective at getting good sound.

toss the cats. I did. just have the shop weld a bung for the 02 sensor straight to the pipe. Im running catless with duals to 2 flowmaster 40's. love it love it.

ill let the tree huggers worry about global warming and ****. the green movements are more of a gimmick than anything.

It's interesting that a shop is completely willing to remove the cats. Because federal law covers catalytic converters, it's a federal crime to remove a working cat from a car or even replace a working cat with something else. The federal fine is in 5 figures and they could even face jail time.

And there is nothing wrong with trying to keep the air clean. It's something that we need to be doing regardless of any requirement for emissions testing or not.

Now as to the OEM cats and especially the later LTx versions, they do flow very well and you may not see any big difference in performance with a replacement high flow cat especially if you have no other mods. Once you add a big cam and headers, then high-flow cats would be a help.

The cats on the LTx cars are welded in place to the front exhaust pipes and a shop would either have to cut off the cat and weld in new pipe or bend new pipe from the manifolds to the X-pipe. They will also have to add O2 sensor bungs as necessary.

The early BB Tri-flo systems actually worked very well with their original 3" pipe all the way back and the system I had on my 92 generated 108dB of exhaust noise at WOT. The original system had a replacement resonator that did little to quiet the exhaust but it did generate lots of resonance in the car. Later on they offered an X-pipe to help cure the resonance along with cutting the diameter to 2 3/4".

I have the early bb tr flo with an aftermarket x pipe. Before the x pipe I had straight pipes and the sound was deeper, louder and a little rougher. I'm not concerned about performance I just want it louder.

It is miami and here nearly every shop will remove the cats without question.

LT1 cats are not restrictive and do not quiet the car hardly at all. Take off the stock catback and you will see what I mean, now the resonator on the other hand is going to kill noise.
One thing you should know, FL does have a noise ordance for cars and trucks.
You get hit with one of those, you can forget about school for a while.

$250 1st offense
$500 2nd/3rd
$1000 and car impounded on 4th.

Ask me how I know.

Well you were the giver or taker. Either way I work for the police dept here and no officer well give someone one of those citations unless the noise is ridiculous and utterly obnoxious there are honda civics here with OPEN header and they get by. There is no way my car will be even slightly close to producing the noise levels that one of the rice burners make at all rpms or not to mention the duallys around here. WOT might be another story but when will I be at WOT.

I'm sure taking the cats might increase it just enough to make me happy. My 91 mustang 5.0 has header xpipe and flowmasters and is much louder. My do I miss that rumble but anyways.
