Default L98 carb conversion

I just bought a 89 coupe for a very reasonable price, but it has been converted to a carb, my question is the instrument cluster lights up nice and bright but non of the gauges work is this because of the conversion or does it have to be rebuilt?

Yes, the instrument cluster needs all of the various sensors installed to make the gauges work correctly.

Is there a way to connect them with a carb?

I carbed my 84 and all the gauges worked except the mpg and range readout. They are on a different circuit than the ecu and should read properly unless someone hacked the wires or didn't connect the sensors. The temperature gauge has it's own coolant sensor. The fuel tank sensor should be intact. Oil pressure and oil temp sensors are near the firewall on the driver's side.

I recently finished up converting my 89 vette to a carb. All gauges work fine(except mpg/ range). The only thing I needed to address was the climate control which stopped working.I hooked up a switch for the blower motor through the fuse box and a choke cable to the blend door. And presto! No more sensors to buy;no more getting home on a flatbed truck;and the car ALWAYS starts!
Since your car's an 89 too I'd have to guess that someone either messed with the wiring or disconnected the speedo and tach sensor's.I guess there is an outside chance that the gauge clusters electronics went bad,but I'd start with checking the sensors and thier wiring first.

Unless the person who converted it removed the Oil sensor, Speed sensor, Temp sensor, etc, the cluster will work fine.

You'd have to be pretty dumb to remove those sensors.

The only things that won't work are the 'trip meter', 'instant and average mileage' and the Torque Converter lockup.

But even the TC can be made to lock with either a toggle switch or a kit for the trans.
