I was driving home and from the time I pulled away the auto transmission would not shift beyond 2nd gear. Then after about 5 minutes it shifted to 3rd and was fine for the rest of the drive. I had this happen about 6 months ago also.
Well I waited because its been fine since and only happened the once so I thought maybe something got stuck and cleared itself. Then when it happened today I decided to ask. The fluid is fine on the stick. I had the fluid and filter changed about 3000 miles ago.
The resident trans Guru take what he sez’s as absolute fact about your troubles
His diagnostic record speaks for its self and he builds some of the best transmissions here in C4

Same thing happened to mine and it was rebuild time. If you go that route, take my advice and have them rebuild your original. DO NOT slap in a different tranny. I got a regular Chevy 700R4 and it is not act anything like the Vette tranny did.
Called a tranny shop near me. The guy said that it sounds like a valve is getting stuck and not allowing the car to shift out of second. He said if the car hasn`t been used much for a while (which it hasn`t) the fluid can turn to jelly inside the valve and cause it to stick. He recommended getting the car really warm and doing some driving that will cause the car to shift up and down the gears a lot and circulate the fluid. He said failing that to put an additive in such as lube guard.

Let me know if it works. I just got my '86 and it did sit a few months. When driving first gear works good, good solid shift into second, second feels good, time to go into third and "WAAAAAHH" feels like neutral. Shifting manually doesn't help. I've only driven it about 4 miles though. Could I luck out here and not have to rebuild the tranny?

Nope. Trans is screwed, more than likely. 3-4 clutch pack is toast.
Sorry for the confusion. I quoted the guy that hijacked your thread.
There is trace amounts of dirt in every crevice of a transmission. ATF is very thin, and highly detergent. It is also under alot of pressure. It can occasionally hang up a valve. I would not worry about it. Sh*t happens. Your trans is likely fine.
