Yeah, I've never loosened or removed my top when it got lifted.
Though how do these tops crack anyways if you don't drop it and don't lift it up when it is in the hatch? I heard of one guys top on here cracking from just sitting in the driveway or going onto a steep driveway.

Just my opinion, but I believe age and weather play a big part.
The sun can be brutal on anything left exposed to it.
I purchased a never used (still in the GM wrapping) acrylic top for mine.
The top is from another '96, and since the VIN number is stamped on them I know it is coming up on 14 years old.
But since it was never used, and stored indoor it still looked like a brand new top.
I've used it for almost two years now, and it still looks new. But my car doesn't sit out in the sun all the time.
Most of us didn't buy these cars new, so we don't really know every detail of it previous life. Some were well taken care of, some were not.
I am curently looking to replace my solid top with an acrylic glass see thru unit....a mechanic says I will need to remove the top every time the car is lifted for service because the stress and flexing will crack and craze the acrylic...anybody hear of this..BS or truth??
If you lift the car up unevenly and drop it down, yes.
