Give the starter a few wacks with something.

The starter gear probably isn't shooting out forward to engage the flywheel. If you crawl under the car you'll see an aluminum cover over the tip of the starter and the flywheel. It's held by four 10 mm screws. Take those off and you can fish it out with a little maneuvering. Once off you'll be able to see what's going on under there when someone cranks the car.

Starter is not fun to get out of there. Almost makes you want a mini starter. I think they will interchange without doing anything if you want to spend some money.
Sounds like you need a solenoid. Last one I changed was about $12.
More than likely all it really needs is the crap cleaned off the "plunger" under the end cap and the bolt contact area. Don't use sandpaper, use a file or knife blade. I scraped off mine about 10 years ago and it still hasn't missed a beat.
While your in there change the starter brushes. They're cheap.
If you're don't know if that fixed it try my fix before you go to the parts store. They'll test it for nothing.
