Default Engine Hood Shock Absorber?

I have been researching much about headlight motor rebuilding lately, and finally got around to pulling out the drivers side light assembly this past weekend. I noticed on the passenger side, a device looking much like a small shock absorber on the inboard side of the right side head light. On the drivers side, I noticed the same kind of mounts, but no 'shock'. We have only had this car for 9 months, so I do not have much of the history of it. However, I believe if a part was meant to be there, it should be there. If you know about this part, and what it is called....I would appreciate hearing about it. Then I can start my search for one!

You didn't say what year, so I'll assume 1984-1989 since I think they are the only years to use those small gas assist struts.

Mid America has them.

The later cars ( my '90 at least ) had the mounts but did not come with the small strut installed

I believe they only came with the one shock on the passenger side. My 89 only has the shock on the passenger side. Though, it may help if you also put a shock on the driver side. My hood stays up no problem with only one shock.

The interesting thing is Autozone doesn't list those for 89. They don't even list any hood shocks at all from what I can tell.

Thanks to all for the quick replies. My car is an '88, and looks like the Autozone down the road has these in stock.

My 89 only has 1 of the small shocks on the passanger side , I have seen another 89 also with only 1 of the shocks on the same side as mine so your car may have come from the factory with just 1 of these shocks plus the long hood shock on the drivers side....WW

Same as my 88. With 2 of these and the long support the clam shell will stay anywhere between open and closed.

I'd like it to where when you pop the hood, the hood raises all the way up by itself. I've heard of a few of these doing this. And I believe someone said Gordon Killbrew stated they all should do that.

You can open the hood with one finger with the 2 new props or lift assists, whatever they are called,,,

mine does not open half way, but it will lift very easily and stay open at half way.

I would love to have something like this for my 90 but I don't see where I have the mounting bracket for them. Can someone please post a picture that shows these mounts so I can look to see if I have them?
