Default 700r4 issues

I had 3rd gear go out in my vette, the transmission shop (who is very reputable) told me, after i told them i wasn't paying to have it rebuilt, that a 700r4 from any SB v8 Chevy will fit, however it will float the valves in my engine? how could this possibly be true? any one have any facts on this? i can get a used 700r4 cheap and stick it in, i just don't want to chance hurting my engine.

sorry, its in a bone stock 92 vette.

A 700r4 from a 2 wheel drive GM will fit. You will have to cut the output shaft approx 5/8" and use your tailshaft. I'm not sure why he said your valves will float. The shift points should be higher on a vette than a Buick Roadmaster. They can be changed if necessary with governor weight and spring tweaking.

is there anyway to tell the difference just by looking at a transmission as to whether it is out of a corvette or not?

Please take my advice. Do NOT RR get just a 'regular' Chevy 700R4. I did that and I really regret it. Have your 700R4 rebuilt. There are certain internal parts that are different on the Vette tranny. The other 700R4's will not act the same as your original. Trust me, you will be disappointed. I was.

There are dozens of internal parts that give a vette trans it's "character".
I spent alot of time documenting the differences so that I had the ability to create one from a non vette core.
