Default 1990 tach trouble

Hello, the tach in my 1990 pegs out and then pegs back to zero and stays there when i start the car. With just the key on, the needle rises above the zero and hangs out at about 500 rpm. Ok i did a little trouble shooting and removed the tach wire out of the distributor and stuck a probe up to the distributor and read about 800 rpm. Now that the tach connector has been removed, when i drive the car to work the tach needle will slowly rise and peg out and shoot all the way back to zero and stay there. Has any one ever seen this before? If anyone has any imput i would surlely appreciate it.
THANKS.

I am interested in this post as well. I have the exact problem with my 90. I have tried things like by passing the filter. I believe it may actually be in the dash.

I just disconnected the plug at the filter today & it still does it. It almost acts like its not getting a good ground.
