Intermittent starting problem on my 87
I have been here before with this nagging starting problem on my box stock 1987 Vette coupe with 172K miles. Here is the story.
A few months back my 87 would exibit an off and on again problem.
At no predictable time when I start the car the it would fire up and idle very rough. The instant I move the throttle plate with the gas pedal or by hand under the hood, the engine dies immediatly. This can go on for up to 10 minutes. The observed fuel pressure at rough idle is 42 lbs. When I manually move the throttle arm the engine dies but the fuel pressure remains constant at 42 lbs. I changed the TPS and the problem went away for a couple of weeks. This AM at Costco I went to start the car and the same old problem came back. I tried to start the car but all I got was a motor start, rough idle and died when I advance the throttle plate. I just happened to have another new TPS so I installed it. Engine started right up and ran fine. Drove it home, made a couple of stops. No problem. The TPS I took out was very new and was OEM. It was however made in China. The new one I put in was from Autozone and was made in Mexico. At this time the Vette runs great.
I adjusted the one I just put in to the spec. volts of 0.55 at idle motor off.
Any suggestions here would be appreciated.
