Has anyone ever run tall valve covers and hit the wiper motor on a L98 car? I have the canted Chevrolet aluminum valve covers and was able to trim the plastic cover on my wiper motor and clear with my GM iron heads but my new Dart heads have the V/C flange raised .250 so it looks like I'm gonna run into major clearence problems. I was wondering if there is some other wiper motor off another GM product that might interchange with some modifications? I really don't want to loose the wiper motor.
Re: alternative windshield wiper motor (eguyett1985)
I am in the same situation with my 84. I am replacing the stock Cross-Fire manifold with an Offenhauser Cross-Ram manifold. ( same thing just bigger ). That manifold will not clear the wiper motor either. I don't know if there is a smaller replacement, or if it is possible to relocate the stock wiper motor.
Well you can cheat a little bit if the heads your running don't have raised V/C rails. What I had to do was remove the thick washers from between the firewall and the mounting bosses on the wiper motor, then notch the plastic cover on the front of the wiper motor. Everything cleared and worked fine. Now if your running aftermarket heads well, your in the same position as I am...guess I'll go to the wrecking yard tomorrow and hunt around..I'm sure something will work even if I have to make a mounting plate and black powder coat it or something...
Re: alternative windshield wiper motor (eguyett1985)
On my 85 with a 383 stroker and tall covers (to clear the rockers) I switched to a standard chrome style cover that allowed me to "convince" it to clear the wiper motor with a rubber mallet and a soft towel. After a little "modification" it fit perfect.
No sense trashing, cutting, aluminum welding an expensive set of covers when all they do is keep the oil in anyway.
I took my time with it, and did not break the chrome.
Re: alternative windshield wiper motor (eguyett1985)
I did the same thing but didn't have to cut the wiper motor cover, just removed thick bushings. It will net you about 3/8~1/2" or so. I'm running GM Performance Tall covers with Crane Stud Girdle underneath and SR. Still takes some "persuading" due to the Air Pump but it works fine.
I will probably use a 'standard' wiper motor similar to this one:
The big gearbox on the stock wiper motor is mostly for the wiper park function. I can live without that. I have to find a usable wiper motor that will clear everything and make an adapter plate that uses the stock mounting points. It will be possible to return everything to stock. I have to figure out the electrical part too.
