Default 4l60e Help PLEASE!!!

Can any 4l60e transmission fit into a 94 c4? Like even a camaro or a trucks 4l60e? Does it have to be certain years? How easy/hard is it to replace one out from a different vehicle to a corvette? Are there different dimension 4l60e? Basically I want to buy one off of craigslist for like $500 and put it in my 94 instead of dishing out $3000 for a rebuild on mine.

Thanks guys this means alot to me, my baby might be running soon after sitting for a year.

Corvette transmissions I believe are specific to the car with little things in them that are different, for one thing the tail-shaft housing and were it bolts to the trans, that area is beefier, although some may say it does not matter, the valve body calibrations are different due to the weight of the car, I know this may be true for the 700r4 and the 4L60, my guess the e isn't different,

Pete K be able to help here

what ever you do don't go on Ebay, go local so they can easily stand behind their work If something goes wrong you don't have the distance thing contributing to the problem....DAMHIK.

The prob with finding another used transmission will be the plug on the side. From 92-96 GM was working to improve their ODB-II system. So all years have a different style plug. some carry over to the other years and some even changed mid year.

The 92 & 93 is ODB-I
the 94 & 95 is OBD-1.5
and the 96 is full ODB-II

Some 94's and 95's will have the ODB-I or ODB-II plug and the later models may have the ODB 1.5.

It's very crazy and hard to locate witch style you need. The good news is you can remove your valve body from your transmission and install it in any 4l60e to keep the same style plug. But only if your valve body is good. and it may not work on all models.

I believe slickfx3 is correct. I believe the corvette 4l60e has different gear ratios and performance shift kits. Although I'm sure the F-body transmission will work just fine you just may loose some performance. one of the other guys on here should be able to tell you more about it then me.

A good quality rebuild should only be about $700 if you R&R the transmission yourself

yes, thanks Rodj, I was told that they need to chop the shaft on a regular trans, to make it fit.

The tailshaft has to be cut 5/8" or 3/4" (can't remember). I did that on mine. You want a 2wd 4L60e from a Lt1 motor, not a later Ls motor. If you get one from a 93 or 94 it will not have the pulse with modulator thingy for the lock up converter which is good. Use the Corvette tailshaft and the Corvette servo.

So if I bought a transmission the best kind to get is one that came from another lt1? Could I use one that came from a LSx? Where could I get a good rebuild trans kit from? How long do you think it would take for me to rebuild it? Could it be a 4l60e even if it came from a truck?

Thanks again guys.

What's wrong with the tranny you have?

If you're reasonably adept with tools, you can rebuild it yourself. There are a number of people on the forum who have done this that can help.

Until you have the transmission out, torn down, and inspected, you don't know what extras you will need, if any. I would suggest starting by picking up the 4l60e rebuild dvd. You can get it here:

Well I was driving one day and put the car into second (auto) went around a corner at like 40mph and mid way through it felt like the diff locked up on me like 4 times within a 2 seconds. It was a hard jerk that shook the whole car. I pulled off and noticed that when I put the car into every gear that it would go into drive no matter what even in R and P. I took it home and it sat outside for couple of weeks magically it would go into reverse and all the other gears like nothing happened. There were fluid spots under the diff every time it sat. When I drive it which is recommended if would shift at 20mph from 1st to 2nd only after I let off the gas slightly. When I 1/2 throttle it it just revs up like it is slipping. I don't have much knowledge in any type of repairs but have patience and time. I just figured that it would need to be rebuilt or replaced. A local non corvette shop said they would look at it for $90 but I figure they would just want my money since I am young and think I am impressionable since I have a track record of shops trying to take advantage of me. Both cases I came out on top. Sorry I am rambling on.

Any more help would be great.

Thanks alot Guys.

Thanks alot Guys.
From what you are describing in this section .... it sounds more like you need to change the fluid in the rear diff and make sure that you add in one or two small containers of the GM diff additive. Sounds like the clutch packs in the diff are locking when the car is turning. I can't comment as to the car being in drive when you shift it into P and R. The auto lock out should absolutely prevent this from happening

This only happened once to the car but never again.

You can use any tailshaft off a Corvette 4L60e from GM.

I was browsing through records on my Corvette and noticed that I had my transmission changed at 99,700 miles. I remember the shop saying that it was a good idea to do a tranny change. So I did it and then when I picked up the car they told me that they wouldn't recommend it if it was passed 100k! I was 300 miles off and they would rather take my money then tell me that it shouldn't be changed. Maybe that's another reason I suspect my transmission to be gone.
