Default 84 runs too cool

It seems like quite a few people have problems with their Corvette running hot. My 84 runs too cool, so the 4+3 overdrive keeps kicking out. When I sit in trafffic for a while, it will get up to about 220F, but traveling @ about 70mph, it keeps dropping under 180F.
I think the previous owner had overheating problems and he replaced the radiator -I'm thinking that he may also have changed the thermostat to a lower temp or maybe even left it out?
I believe that this car needs some heat for the overdrive and to run better ...mine seems to run rich and takes forever to get over 160F in the morning when the temperature is below 50F.
I think I should install a new standard temperature thermostat?
Thanks,
Glen

check your thermostat. I think your car needs a 190 to run as designed.

And would like to add that when you try to replace the thermostat, be carefull not to ruin the bolts on the housing.

They can be a P.I.T.BUTT, if you get the point(s).

Soak them in some penetrating oil of some kind to be on the safe side.

Mine did the exact same thing. After I revamped the cooling system with new parts....all the sudden it runs too cool. damn thing would kick out when the temp gauge read 159

So yeah, new thermostat fixed that issue very quickly

when folks say that their car runs hot....then others pipe up and claim that the C4 is designed to run hot.....I just shake my head

boil out the radiator, put in a new water pump, flush the system and clean out from in between the condenser and then tell me what your readings are.....

See me coolant thread
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...ars-later.html

I drove my car all the way to Vegas today......the thermostat kept the temps at 175 all the way here.

I hoped that may be the reason it seems to run rich and I,m getting about 14MPG in mixed driving. Thanks!
