I'm tuning up the car, getting ready to roll for spring and summer.
I'm planning on replacing the cap and rotor and was wondering if I should get one of those "Danger High Voltage" power cap/coil pieces from Ecklers. Or will a Delco piece be fine? I've got a ZZ4 in the car with Rapid Fire plugs and new Belden plug wires. I'm planning on having my L98 rebuilt to a 383 and putting it back in and will swap the dizzy back to that engine in the future. Any suggestions?
Sorry to interrupt your post, but what does it mean to rebuild your L98 to a 383? Will the engine look the same? I assume this means more horsepower. How much more are you going to get? Sounds like a great job. Good luck.
Whitecloud, that means lots of time and $$ going towards a project that wont reap the same investment when sold. So, if you look at it- it looks like a bad investment. Physically look different? Yes, I may paint it red and have different heads and a different intake on top. The main changes go inside the engine.
Rebuild involves a lot of machine work to make sure the block is sound and ready to accept the different internals. A 383 involves boring .30 over and a crank with a longer throw.
Checked at Oreileys today and they have a Borg Warner cap and rotor for $50 not including the coil. Do I need a new coil? Should I still go OEM over this?
Can't tell if this is a joke post or not but yes like Pete said OEM Delco replacement parts.
Haha. I always find it funny how people refer to AC Delco as OEM, which is incorrect. For instance, if you get an AC Delco water pump, you are NOT getting OEM. For OEM, you need to get an Airtex, with regards to an L98. Having said that, it doesn't mean AC Delco can't slap their name on an OEM made part. Most of the time, AC Delco is just aftermarket. Obviously, when in doubt. I'd look at AC Delco. But I wouldn't refer to them as OEM.

Interesting... definitely food for thought! I just saw Airtex on the Summit website and thought, "never heard of them, must not be any good."
It's best to get a cap and rotor with brass terminals. I'm not sure if the AC Delco as that or not.
Whatever you get, be sure to look at the terminals on the cap. A good cap will have copper terminals; the cheap crap has aluminum or brass terminals. Likewise on the rotor. Copper is a better conductor of electricity.
Also, silicone dielectric on the boots and antisieze on the threads is a good thing. A little silicone dielectric on the bottom lip of the cap will help keep water out of the cap, too.
Seems as though most caps are aluminum or brass. Copper terminals are harder to find as I'm searching around the net. Maybe I'm searching in the wrong places?

Hmm. All I've ever heard were aluminum and brass terminals. And to go with brass. If they make copper ones that are better, then I guess that would be the way to go. What caps/rotors have copper terminals? I've only seen brass terminals on the better caps/rotors.

The Accel models shown in those pics have copper terminals. Go with those.
That does look interesting. Though I seem to recall many years ago people saying to avoid the clear caps. I think they had a tendency to crack or something. But I could be wrong as it has been many years ago.
It is made of a different materal. Polymer Carbonate plastic... same stuff headlights and water bottles are made of. The others are made of Alkyd or Thermoplastic.
