What are the advantages of this set up over just the cable with driver software? I would love to get away with just the cable and software for 60 bucks. It is really hard to find info on what is needed for the 870 ECM and some of it is conflicting. I plan on getting a burner and doing my own chip. So this is what I think I need:
-ALDL to USB cable and software drivers...60 bucks
-WinADL.....Free...supposedly the best for reading the slow baud rate of my 870 ECM
This will be strictly for datalogging for now..... Thanks for the info RodJ
My puter is Vista supported USB

I have all Moates gear but don't see any advantage of that for you over the $60 cable
Give serious consideration to buying a old , cheap (the sort people give away ) laptop you can run Win 98 on.
Might be so old it has a serial port ( no one wants those laptops these days)
Some have reported problems with Vista and datalogging software
and it also said something about a 10k resistor. Does it go somewere in the cable, if so, were? Thanks
If you look at the instructions PDF page on ALDL.com, it appears the cover to the USB end of the cable has a "circuit board" inside. The cable package includes a jumper -- that when positioned as shown in the instructions -- will create a 10k resistance between pins A and B of the ALDL plug. (Note: it says to try w/o first,,,but I notice that the Moates cables says to set it's built-in switch to the 10K option. I believe that was for pre-1994 cars.)
So, you may have to install the 10k jumper (inside the USB plug's plastic screw-on cover) to get the Amazon (ALDL) cable to work correctly.
Note: Instructions implied it was desireable and won't hurt to try the cable w/o the resistor first.

vista will probably present issues, no issues with, 98, xp home or pro...MO is to use usb cables, the advantage with moates gear is that it works the way it is supposed to, and the "auto connect usb"drivers eliminate issues. As to 10k, you will know once you put the key to the "on"/acc. position what position the switch needs to be (fans typically will go on).
When my old laptop finally died I sent the old cable back to AKM and upgraded to USB and I never looked back...my USB cable is automatically detected and has loaded tunes and completed dozens of datalog evolutions without a hiccup...
I have a 1995 LT-1. I run the USB ALDL cable in my laptop (no serial port) and i didn't want an external, PCMCIA serial converter to worry with. For software I run Datamasters and it has been very satisfactory. You must determine the Com Port and enter it in the software. I tried all the freeware and had trouble with all and went to Datamasters with no problem.

Part of why I haven't jumped on logging software yet, can't find any straight information on an 85 short of how to swap in a newer ECM.
I have several laptops with serial ports still but I'd suggest finding a cable that is documented to work well with USB. No sense adding 100 bucks to the cost buying an old fllaky laptop.

I use the EASE program (serial cable, got it years ago) and I have no problem scanning the 1985 ECM. Did it for another member a few years back. If memory serves me right, there are fewer things that are scanned and the data rate is very slow compared to my '87. ('165 ECM)
Cool, I dont know about the driver, its still comming in the mail. I just wanted to make sure, im using the 92-93 y-body for my 1989 tpi corvette. also is it fairly straight forward? You said read the instructions closely so I assume I will be able to find a set of instructions out there either way. Thanks for your help, really appreciate it!
