Any one know of some software I could use with my OBD1 to usb cable so I could see the diagnostics and live readings on my computer, its a 1989 5.7 liter 350 sbc (TPI). THANKS!!
Try this site ... http://www.obd2allinone.com/sc/pages.asp?pageid=60 ... has links to many programs that are freeware or try before you buy stuff. Also you might need USB drivers if you did not get them with your cable.
TTS Datamaster, you get 20 uses before you have to buy.
Thanks I'll give her a shot, you think you could walk me through it? I just bought a odb1 to usb cable, I assume one goes to the vette and the othe to the usb port, once I hook it up do I turn the car on then start the programe or do I need to set some settings first, if so let me know, Thanks
Looks like the right cable, did they give you a driver?
If you use Datamaster, you need to download the 92-93 y-body version. Next you need to read their instructions carefully, some people can use the base settings fine and people like me have to tweak them.
Make sure you take the jumper off, that is for earlier ECM's.

Cool, I dont know about the driver, its still comming in the mail. I just wanted to make sure, im using the 92-93 y-body for my 1989 tpi corvette. also is it fairly straight forward? You said read the instructions closely so I assume I will be able to find a set of instructions out there either way. Thanks for your help, really appreciate it!

Most of the USB to serial drivers ( FTDI is the most common) require some " tweaking " of the laptop ports settings.Nothing major , just won't auto detect like with a regular USB device
You have to check what Comms port the laptop has nominated for the cable and then go into the software and select the same port so cable can communicate
You still need a cable to physically connect the laptop to the ECM ALDL connector
Cheapest going here http://www.aldlcable.com/
The driver is only a software program to make the USB port work like a old style serial port that the ECM uses for communication

Once I setup the Comms port correctly,I have never had a problem and because it is powered from the USB port you don't need extra power from the cig lighter
So what is that adapter on the Moates set up? Does that take the place of the driver software? And Moates only lists there set up for 86 on up...I'm wondering why that is...
true even I paid for it ... and also bought this cable http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u which under windows 7 dont even have to worry for drivers
it will detect it automaticaly, for my '91 i just had to make some modification on the port configuration, its documented in the datamaster help
