Default Pick a stall

As many of you may know my transmission is out (after 96,000 miles and over 700 runs) and is being rebuilt by Frank Ferandez at his Lee Myles transmission shop in Staten Island NY.

My question now is what stall speed convertor should I install???????????

I now have a 3000 Vigilante and it's not enough.

are you stuck on vigilantee? yank has some good converters and they have EVERY feature and even outperform the vigilante. they have STR ratings up to 3.0, stall speeds up to ~5000k i believe. and you even get the free stall speed change. http://www.converter.cc

If it's just going to be a drag car, I say go with the biggest one.

John,

You'll still be able to drive it on the street.... though you probably don't want to get in stop and go traffic in hot weather.

My vote was for going big... Wheelsup in his stock shortblock 350 broke into the 10's with a similar set-up to you...... I don't know if you'll be able to break into the 10's too..... but you should be close.

good luck

Isn't rule of thumb 500rpm below peak torque?

John, you know ,if it were my choice,I'd do the 4400.I assume you are making peak tq in the 4700-4900 range. You have the taller tire to take the extra hit.My only concern would be whether or not the rear suspension parts will hold up.
You are in the "warning" zone with your combo in respect to the aluminum parts in the back.
Your car should react even better than Lennys who rans a similar stall, but only has a 26" tire.
Let us know your choice.

if its going to be drag only...get rid of the lock up. save you 10+lbs of rotating weight.

Gee, sorry to hear about the tranny John

But don't worry, your in good hands with Frank :yesnod:

I finally decided to give my new racing tranny that Frank reworked a little test tonight on the way home. I was stuck behind a van for about 2 miles on a long curving 2 lane highway 100 in Westchester doing a boring 49 MPH. When the dashed yellow line appeared on my side with no oncomming headlights I floored-it , pulled-over and WOW     the tranny immediately kicked down hard to 3rd and she reved to 4,500 rpm before I let off after about 2 seconds.......I looked at the speedometer and I was on my way down from about 90 MPH!!:jester

YES Frank.....the beast is purrin now :yesnod: :yesnod:

And I only have a 2,800 stall Protorque lock-up ;)

Hey John.....
Sorry to hear about your tranny.. breaking parts is not fun... but its an opportunity to upgrade at least.. i am assuming this quick vette of yours is not going to be used for daily trips to the 7-11 if your considering a 4400..... well its been stated already and i would certainly agree that choosing a stall is generally fairly simple.. providing you have a dyno graph as a reference.. 500 revs before peak Torque.. i bet shes gonna slingshot out of the hole after this... very exciting... looking forward to hearing your progress and looking forward to seeing your new times!!

Al, i've been putting this job off for over a year. The trans has been slipping bad for a very long time so I just said enough is enough and took the trans to Frank.
I'm looking foward to getting it back.

My tranny went out and I got to put in a 2800. Really happy with the mod plus I added the shift kit. Now if I could only catch a rock to replace my windshield. I have had this scratch forever... :seeya
