Some things to consider.
Muncie is 1 to 1 in top gear. With 3.75's it would be a great city car, but freeway driving would suck. I have a 396 with a mincie 22 and 4.11's and 75 is about max on the freeway, without running my engine at a high rpm.
May have issues with length and rear tranny mount.
yea,
first, you have no crossmember to bolt it to, and no structure to bolt one to.
second, you have no C beam to stabilize the rear end in your car cause your trans and rear are bolted together because there's no crossmember. So you will have to fabricate one.
it will be miserable to drive anywhere but a 45 mph zone or at a drag strip.
it will be a missle for about 1500 feet, but a terrible driver without overdrive.
I drove my 57 chevy pickup without overdrive for 35 years and put a 4+3 in it, and now I can hear the radio on the freeway. my gas mileage jumped up 10 miles a gallon to 20 mpg, and the truck keeps up with the traffic on the freeway at 1900 RPM, and I'm doing 75.
Clearly I made a wise choice to put overdrive in it, maybe not the best trans ever, but reliable, and fun to dink with while you are in town, and overdrive when you want to go somewhere efficiently.
what's in your 85 now? auto or manual? If it's auto now, you will have a lot of work to do the converting......personally, if I was going to put a different tranny in my Vette and it was going to be a manual (either way if you are starting from auto 700R or from an Doug Warner 4+3 manual), the Muncie would not be my choice at all.......I understand you have one at your leisure, but I would find a better place for it than a later model Vette......it's old technology and I am not sure what the individual gears are for 1st -4th, but it I believe 4th gear in those were a 1:1 ratio offering higher revs at cruising speeds, especially with your current gearing.......I would rather spend the additional $ and get a better tranny offering at least 5 gears (Keisler, makes a set up for your car)......just me......to me you might as well carb it too if you do that...going backwards......
ol' time rock n roll, loose 50 lb of ugly fat, only downer is engine buzz on turnpike...need to fab a simple bracket to get from the trans to the c-beam, no rubber mount reqd, top of new bracket should have bars forward to the trans/bellhsg bolts (super t-10 case for 4-3 has an extra bolt/beef at 12:00 high vs vintage super t-10 case, torque loading under acceleration thing)...four short bolts hold the new bracket to the c-beam vs the two long ones for the 4-3 to miss the driveshaft front u-joint...need a longer driveshaft, ~2'' IIRC...VSS sender from 96 (?) dodge picker for ~$50 new any auto parts store screws right onto the muncie mech speedo drive.
thanks guys, that is exacty my plan for my 85.bought the car no hood [fire men chpped it open for SMALL electrical fire] owner replaced all wiring only to find locked engine. so installed 69 350 short block used the stock heads. installed torqer 2 600 holly and wait for it here it comes......a550 lift cam stock trans and rear wow start it up makes babies cry. drove it home got creamed by a yugo.why do people do this? anyway have access to many older parts retired feeling cheap why not? camel humps 202 victor jr preformer carb 3.75 rear m-22 45 yrs exper. i remember the brutal FEELING of these old drive trains even on the street at 45
Sell that trans to a hot rodder, and get the proper trans, or conversion trans for the car. Even if you get it to some what work, it will probably never be quite right.
I can see if it is for monster garage, and you make one pass with it, but to make it a street car all pieced together IMO is more trouble than it is worth.

An M22 is worth enough that you should be able to swap for a ZF with a few + $ , and save a million headaches.

not 'brute' just GOOD feelin, took a man to drive one.
550 lift cam should also have enough duration/lap to get 'heartbeat of america' exhaust music babies won't cry, instead go to sleep (sounds like mama is close), my kids did that
one suggest : save the camels, todays 'pump junk' gasoline needs alum heads with hardened valve seats.
you're not the only dude on this wave, C4's are becoming the '67 camaro' of the 21 st century
