So, for a few days I smelled coolant in the cockpit, but not the engine bay of my '88 coupe - 56k miles. My windshield fogged over, and a fellow Corvette friend told me my heater core. Problem is, I've been reading, and I haven't seen or felt a single drop of coolant in the passenger bay. The past few days I haven't really smelled the coolant, and the window isn't really fogging. Could it still be the heater core?
The smell and the window fog are the 2 things that showed up on mine, if your lucky the wet floor will never happen because you will have changed it out before that .....Good Luck...WW
That heater core won't heal itself. You can bet it's leaking or will leak. Feel the carpet on the right side. Press a paper towel into it. The antifreeze will show up. It is a tough job to replace the heater core. I spent most of Sunday just getting to mine. Mostly requires patience and small hands. Neither of which I have. I let mine go and I now have to replace the carpet too. Good luck!
Don't debate the issue. The symptoms you have described are a heater core. Set aside a weekend and make the swap.
And yes you do have to pull the dash.
If you do the (Fast Guy Method) which is what a lot of the guys on here use you don't have to pull the dash, just the passenger seat.. I believe the dash pulling starts on the 1990 and newer cars. The earlier years up to 1989 are a lot easlier to do.....Good Luck..WW
