I'm replacing the pads on my 96 and since my Preliminary 96 shop manual dewfers to the 95 (which I don't have) on all brake issues, I'm operating in the dark.
So what is the process? For example, can I retract the cylinders without opening the bleeders (on some anti-lock systems you have to)? What other matters do I need to be on the lookout for?
Thanks. Cirre96
Rear brakes are a bear of a job compared to the fronts..atleast in my opinion. Remeber to have a large ..i think 36mm? socket ready to take the axle nut off, in case the rotor needs to be turned or replaced.

Re: Advise on Rear pads needed (Oh My)
Really?! The back rotors came right off of my 89. Still have to pull the caliper bracket like the J55 fronts, but really very easy. Takes longer to jack up the car, well just about!
Don't know enought about the 96 rear brakes, could be different than the 89 I guess.
Rear pads on my 95 were easy. The hard part is jacking up the car. I didn't have to open the bleeders or anything. The rotors just came off like they are supposed to. Only the calipers held them in place.
Procedure:
1. Jack up car
2. Remove wheel
3. Unbolt caliper
4. Remove pads
5. Remove rotors
6. Have rotors turned down
7. Reinstall in reverse order
It's real easy..just don't mess with the emergency brake (and there is no need to) because if you disconnect it at the caliper without disabling the auto adjusted, you can get hurt.
I just used a big C-clamp around the caliper to squeeze the piston back in. Oh, make sure that you leave the old pad on the piston so you can push in the middle and not bind the piston in the cylinder. I've used the same technique on countless cars and it works great.
