I am in the process of replacing the wheel bearings on my 85 z51. I have the rear assemblies off and was wondering if anyone has any experiance as to the best way (easiest) way to service the u-joints on the half shafts. Is there a way to do this job without messing with the rear end alignment? THANKS.
What "service are you wanting to do? If the ujoints have more that about 50k on them, you should replace em, I would, and did at about 45k. If you remove the tierod ends, and the bolt at the hub for the camber brace, then the saddle clamps, you can remove the half shafts. When you put them back, should be no change to the alignment as the adjustment locations have not been touched and there is no adjustment to the parts removed.
There is a good post about how much u-joints cost going on right now and should have a link to Scorp's how-to page that should answer all your questions.
Thanks for the replys. That is a great "how to" by Scorp. Better than haynes. Yes I should have said replace instesd of service. The devl said the shafts can be removed by taking the camber brace loose on the knuckle end. I think I will try that first. Thanks again for all the great info.

They can be, but I found removing the other end and pulling down on the camber rod to push the knuckle outwards was easier. Thanks on the how too compliment. :)
My logic was not to touch anything adjustable. By removing the camber brace at the knuckle, push it down out of the way, pull the knuckle toward you and the shaft will fall out. Either was works. Just sharing my logic.
I do it differently than both of you. I actually remove my rear spring and remove the bracket at the differential end so I do not change any settings. It only take 5-10 minutes to drop the rear spring.
