Has anyone replaced a starter on a c4 and if so, did you run into any snags...I was wondering if it is worth my time to swap out my own starter or should I have a real mechanic do it...I would describe myself as an average mechanic...my only hesitation is I don't have a shop anymore and I would be swaping this outside where she sits in the driveway...
Took mine out this afternoon waiting for the replacement to arrive tommorrow morning. I was just jacking up the car to see how difficult it might be and I had it out a few minutes later.
Disconnect two wires. One is obvious and easy to access. I think it's a 13 or 14mm socket. The other is some very small nut and mine had layers of crud so I just cut the wire and will put a new connector on it in the morning.
The starter is connected to the engine by two 16mm bolts that are easy access with a 6" or so extension and came right off after using a pursuader to break them free. Once those are out it just drops right down. This is a piece of cake.
I also replaced my starter in my '94 in my driveway. Disconnect your battery, jack her up, remove old starter, install new one. A couple hour job. Take a look at the first pic in post #4. This pic will show you where the bolts are and how best to get them out. But don't believe anyone who tells you it will be out a "few minutes later". It's easy, but it 'aint that easy !!!!
Thanks guys...additionally I see these starters new on ebay for about $100, which includes shipping, but autozone wants $229 with a $70 core charge...sounds like a no brainer to me. Am I missing something...these ebay starters are for real right!!!!

The new one went back in just as easy. Less than 1/2 hour and I changed the oil while I was down there. That stretched it out a little longer. The two mounting bolts are 14mm. The hot wire from the battery is held on by a 13mm. The small nut for the ignition wire is an 8mm.
Just replaced my '94 starter, thanks in part to the tips shared above and a some YouTube videos. Used a floor jack and two jack stands, just jacked the passenger side. With a good set of wrenches (with an extender) it worked. I did benefit from having an extra pair of hands under the car (with my 13-year son), because putting that 10+ lb thing back in over your head, without tons of room is a bit tricky (not sure how successful I would have been on my own for that part... that being said, I'm not particularly experienced either). Took a while longer because while down there I wanted to clean of a bunch of oily crud.. but it worked! Got a remanufactured AC Delco, just like the one that was on the car, for $165 on Rock Auto (that included $50 core charge, taxes, and 2-day shipping via FedEx. Nice thing about getting the exact starter is that I didn't have to worry about getting it to fit or running wires differently.
