Default High Idle 86?

My 86 is idling at 900 rpms. Seems a bit high. What or where should I begin to look. I cleaned the MAF and the throttle plates, last year I put in new plugs and wires. Car has 82k and runs great but seems to have dropped in gas mileage and I just failed CT emissions. I had the car fixed to pass emissions and it was the mechanic who noticed the high idle. I thought I would start by asking here before letting anyone else touch it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I just wanted to add that the high idle remains after the car has been warmed up, it's not just a cold start thing.

I recommend that you start by cleaning or replacing (if necessary) the idle control valve. This important part can easily become clogged with soot. Check it out.

Did you clean the IAC housing too? Did you adjust the minimum idle. Is the timing where it should be? Checked for the vacuum leaks yet? How is the O2 sensor?

o2 sensor was just put in last year. I am going to take off the throttle body so I can get to the back of the plates and clean or replace IAC. I have never had the timing checked since I have owned the car, 2 years. All the vacuum was just checked by the mechanic who fixed it for emissions testing. I have never done any work on an engine so I don't really know what I am doing yet. I am going to follow the FSM instructions and probably bug you guys with stupid questions along the way. The good news is it runs great, just idles high. I have done just about everything else you can do to this car so I guess it's time to learn about the engine. Thanks for the help

Do you have a scantool? I would check the timing first with a timing light. You can't check it any other way that I know of. With the scantool you can see what the ECM is seeing. Also I use that to set the min idle.

I don't have a scan tool or timing light, I would have no idea how to use them. Thats why I figured I would start by giving the throttle body a good cleaning and checking the IAC to see if it's dirty and or needs to be replaced. I see the idle screw is on there as well. After looking through the FSM I think I can handle these steps. I may end up at a garage to deal with the timing. I like to do the things that I think I can handle without causing further damage. Thanks getting me started in the right direction

Set Timing

Get a scantool and learn to use it. It isn't too difficult
