Default does the button on the automatic shifter **** do anything?

I see the pictures of the shifter alone and the threads hold the ****; but is there a rod that releases any lockouts?

Yes, you have to press the button to move the shifter from park.

I'm quite sure it is like 100% of GM automatics with the button. If you don't press the button, you can shift back and forth between N-D. And you can shift up from 1-2-3-D, but not back down.

If you press the button, you can do anything.

The **** is held in place with a clip, I'm not sure what threads you are speaking of.

The button activates a rod that runs down the center of the shaft holding the shifter ****. You can pry/pull the button off and the clip that holds it on remains on the shifter. To remove the shifter ****, there is an external snap ring under the button that will need to be removed. I cannot remember if the **** screws off or just slides off when the snap ring is removed, but once the snap ring is removed its a simple task.

You can drive the car without the ****. I drove mine for several days without the **** while reworking my interior. Its easier if you put the button back on, but it can be done either way.

You can, but you might want to wear a glove, that rod is pretty sharp.
