On the highway, when I lift off the gas but not on the brakes, the torque converter unlocks. When I ease back into the gas, the converter locks back up. I thought the converter shouldn't unlock unless the brakes are applied or the car is going slower than 35 mph. What could be causing this?
A buddy of mine has just got his 86on the road and he has a 700R4. His is occasionally dropping out of overdrive converter lockup at steady pedal highway speeds, then back into overdrive converter lockup.
He said it's annoying and has checked the fluid level, reset the cable, but still it occasionally drops out of OD converter lockup, then back in.
Not being a "tranny man" I couldn't help much. Any ideas?
They are supposed to do that, it helps with the fuel economy.
Whici post are you responding to?
I suspect it isn't mine because I know the converter isn't supposed to drop out of lockup then back in at steady pedal level road conditions.
It's supposed to remain locked until load becomes so heavy (like when climbing a hill) that causes it to drop out of lockup. Once the load is off, the converter is supposed to relock and remain that way. Operating like that is the most efficient and also lowers engine rpm 2 hundred or so.
The "they are suppose to do that" was at you I believe.
The reason is they are suppose to drop out of lockup when you let off the gas. Your trying to fix something that is not broke don't head down that road. I've been there it's not pretty.

Mine does the same thing, I was told by a number of tranny guys that's what it's supposed to do :yesnod:
Can you disable the lockup function on a '93 700R4 (non-electronic) without opening up the transmission? I've got the dreaded lock/unlock shudder and stumble, and I can't get it repaired until November, so I was wondering if there was a solenoid or switch outside the case that I could unplug to defeat the lockup until I can get it in the shop.
I know it'll cost me fuel economy, but I'll feel better and have a safer, more responsive car with the lockup disabled until I can get to the shop.

Right, but if you re-read my post you'll see that my friend's is unlocking at steady state. He's not concerned with it unlocking when he lifts from the gas. He's concerned that it unlocks, then relocks at steady state.
So my question remains, why does his converter unlock when he is driving at a steady state (not accelerating or decelerating), not going up or down a hill?
The shifting out of overdrive problem can be solved by replacing the TV boot valve in the transmission. You can get it from GM and B&M also sells it. Call www.pro-built.net and describe the problem and he well send you the right parts. You may also want to put in a Transgo shift kit while your at it.

I can't say for sure that it's the same problem I had but-I've got an 86 also; same problem-unlocking and then locking at steady throttle. The speedo was reading the vss and giving me a steady/correct mph readout. But when I scanned it I found the mph that the ecm was seeing was dropping below my lockup mph and then coming back up. It didn't read too low so it didn't set a vss code. The wire coming out of the dash to the ecm was slightly loose at the dash-yup that one drove me crazy for a while! Well OK, just crazier. Hope this $0.02 helps.

Just unplug the harness at the trans-it's on the drivers side above the pan and linkage.
