Default Should it be?

Guys,
Should my car be really spinning bad from a dead stop. Now it takes out hard and when it hits about 2500-3000 RPM it really starts to pull hard were I can feel the tires breakin loose. But no real appreciable wheel spin off the start. I know that hooking up is good, but is it because the engine is not tuned correctly or is it because of the low torque converter stall speed and it must build up to the 2.5k - 3.0 k before creating enough butt to break the tires. My dad had a 93 camaro and it used to burn out pretty good from a dead start. Just curious. Thanks

My stock motored TPI spins the tires from a 10-15 mph roll with street tires.

Yep, from a dead stop no problem, from 10-15 no problem. Depending on the weather sometimes up to 25mph she'll spin freely.

What do you think is keeping me from spinning? The reason I thought it was the converter is that if I am in second and force the downshift, it will break them loose. But from a dead stop, only if the tires are wet and then it goes practically sideways, but then again the Rs get up higher quicker.

I think the stock gears are so high that you have to get some rpm's before any real horsepower is made. Mine acts like yours unless i preload. If i hold the brake, and give it some throttle, load it up, then break loose, it goes crazy. Once my relatively stock 89 starts to spin, it allows the rpm to get up into the power band, and it smokes and spins wildly. That's not the best for 1/4 mile E.T.s, but it sure puts on a show. In fact, once mine starts to spin, i can back off the throttle, feather it a bit to regain some traction. By doing this i can make it spin moderately for a long distance. If i just hit the throttle from a dead stop, it hardly spins at all. I'm sure a higher rpm torque converter and/or lower rear end would make it much more impressive off the line.

Darrell,
Thanks. I have 3.07 gears now and I think that and the converter are to blame. As you mentioned, if I hold the brake and take out it really will burn them. I guess it would be camparable to taking out in second with a standard. (maybe not that bad, but you get the idea). I definately want to get a vigilante 3100 rpm converter, but with my wedding coming up its going to be tough. Oh well, off to tune the beast some more. Thanks all. Keep the comments coming if someone has some.

Ski

When are you going to get some track time under your belt ?

You should burn a few chips and try them at the track.

With 2.59 gears I can spin from a dead stop all the way thru 1st and into 2nd.
This is by taking my foot off the brake and hitting the gas, not holding the brake at all.

Guys,
I was just in from burning chips. WOW I think I am getting it better and better. Average times using craige's software as a guage is ~12.3 sec. Made several runs and they all felt strong. Most 60ft times are well below 2 sec. 1.85 -1.93(worst). I had my dad with me and he got out on a couple to investigate wheel spin. The tires are spinning. They just do not squeel. He said there is a bit of smoke too, I just can't tell from inside the car. There is absolutely no side kick at all. Just straight shooting. I also made a pass by him at ~20 mph and floored it. HE said they were definately smoking that time. SO I guess I am getting spin I just can not tell from in the car. I amazed at how well the car handles with wheel spin. It definately getting more spin than his camaro did, just doesn't carry on side to side like the camaro did.
I am planning a trip to the track as soon as the weather here breaks. In PA it may be far from over. Early April I will be going to the DYNO to see how it performs there. I will keep you all posted.
My WB02 sensor will be in hopefully this week too. I know I am running WAY too rich in WOT. I figure there is at least 40 more horses to be had with the chip alone. But I am taking my time and doing things as methotical as possible. Once the WB is here I will start tuning at WOT and adjusting fuel. With the regular o2 is it basically a guess. I have to much money in this thing to be guessing.
Thanks for all you help and comments.

Oh yeah, the car is shifting at ~4800 RPM on the logs. I do not want to push it without a new tach and light. The stock tach is going up to an touching the red, but logs show a much less RPM. My guess is that the stock tach is off as all the others are. I am going to order a new one with a shift light and that should also take some ET off. Later
