Default 86 steering wheel

I pulled out the turn signal assembly and after reinstalling it I cant get the C clip in no matter how hard i press in the plate. I know the C clip only goes in one way but i cant ever get close enough to the slot. I installed the spring, cancelling cam and lock plate. I lined up the cancelling cam to align to that little black plastic piece on the turn signal assembly (hope that right). Im trying to push on that plate as hard as i can but it seems to bottom out and I cant slide that C clip in because im about 2 mm out. Its almost seems like the shaft went down a little after using the steering wheel puller to take steering wheel off

Yes, you need a "lock plate tool". You should be able to find one at an auto parts store.

does it take an extreme amount of pressure to push that plate in place? I used the wood handles of two hammers to push the plate in and it seems to very hard and i dont want to break anything. Has anyone had a problem with the shaft being pushed in a little because of the using the steering wheel puller? I have the FSM and i cant find a section on that

It takes a good bit of pressure. The coils on that spring under the plate are stiff.

I had one last bit of info. If i remove the spring that goes before the cancelling cam and just put the cancelling cam in I should be able to see the slot for the C clip, right? as of now I dont see it when i just put the cacelling cam in alone without the the spring.

can someone tell me the tool i need to put back the pressure plate on the steering wheel? I got one from autozone but I have the telescope steering wheel (like all of us) and i dont see how it would work if the center shaft comes straight out when using the tool. The C clip holds the telescope from coming out and thats what im trying to put in.

Thanks,

The telescope lever has to be locked, then you can do it.

how would you lock it? If you look at the second picture all thats there is the cancelling cam and pressure plate im trying to press in to put the clip in. Did i miss something on the intall? I know i can lock it by putting that star shaped piece in and turning it all the way in, but then i cant screw the tool in because that stars in the way.
