Rich gives some good advice here. It's difficult to get to, so just replace it so you won't have to go back in. If you need to get another angle on it, you can remove the left outside tail light and get a hand in there. You'll have to remove the license plate, then the inside light first, then you can get to the nuts on the outside one. A genius design from GM...yeah, right.

i have replaced 5 - 6 of these. best way is on a lift. pull left rear wheel and inner wheel well. it is right there. undo the mounting bolts and drop down below quarter panel. you will have to twist it some. loosen set screw pull old antenna out with plastic strip. you will have to take a few more steps to get it out and before you can reassemble. remember how you took it apart!!!!! because it goes back together the opposit way. if you can do a tune up yu can do this. if you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, sell the car get new one antenna bad. LOL. you cannot, easily remove antenna assembly from car because the electrical connection goes into the rear compartment. the cord (wire harness) coming out of motor is soldered. the other end is up in and under all the rear compartment molding and then under a bunch of foam. it a real effort to get this out and then BACK IN. if per chance you live close to me i will gladly help you replace it. i have a lift and all the tools. you supply part and beer. i would wait til i had the job done b-4 you bring the beer...... i can just see it extending down instead of up lol.
i live in syracuse ny. close enough?
