Dennis, Ive never used one but I understand claybars work well in bring back the shine to our paint.

You may get a better response at the Car Care Forum here. Go to the drop down forum at the upper left and select "General" then click on the Car Care forum.

Good luck!

I would start by washing it with Dawn liquid detergent......then use a claybar...

After this prep the car should be ready for whatever wax you choose..

Def claybar it well, I've heard good things about Turtlewax Ice, but haven't tried it.

You mentioned polishing....Seems like that would remove any water marks. It does when I polish mine. Which BTW it needs now......

If you have some waterspots from very hard water or rainwater where the air quality is not good, it may take some serious work to remove them; possibly even a wet sanding with something like a 2000 grit paper and buffing with a professional type of polish. That's lots of work but if the waterspots are deeply embedded into the surface, that may be what you will have to do.

My Silverado is black and it sits outside so waterspots are common. What I have done is to wash the truck with hot soapy water and some white vinegar. I remove tar deposits with something like WD-40 or a good tar remover product. Then wash again.

I have had really good luck with Griot's Garage products and especially with their clay bar. The Meguiar's clay bar doesn't work all that well I use the Griot's clay bar with their "Speed Shine" as the lubricating agent and not soapy water.

After claybar, I will wash the truck again but with less soap, then dry everything with towels. I have one of the older Griot's DA buffers (Porter Cable model 7336 which is actually a sander). Griot's has specially made foam pads for their polish as well as their wax and they are different.

I would recommend using the Machine Polish 3 to clean the surface and remove any swirls or light scratches. After that, you can use their "Best of Show" wax or if you don't want to apply wax 3 times per year, use their Paint Sealant for a long lasting protectant.

Groit's makes some very good stuff but it is pricey compared to other products. They don't do the "one-step" stuff you find at parts stores. There is more work involved to their products, but you can get show-car quality results if you want to do the work.

Go to their web site and look around and request a catalog. Some very neat stuff in there.

Turtle wax makes a black wax. I use it on any darker colored vehicle especially if you don't want deeper scratches looking white from regular wax.

TR3 Resin Glaze is great for things like this! It can also be used to clean/re-polish stainless exhuast and trim and also to polish scratches out or plastic lenses. As per the instructions DO NOT APPLY IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT! Be thing is to wash the car and park it in a garage so that the body is cool. Put the wax on a cloth and use that to spread it on the car. If you squirt it directly onto hot paint you can leave squirt marks (I did it once and was shocked at how quickly it happened). As long as you're careful, it's awesome stuff. You'd be amazed at what it can do for an old, oxidized paint job too.
