Default Anyone running ProComp head's? Help needed

I saw a lot of these these on a popular auction site and can be had for $650.00 shipped. I thought these would be a great replacement for my old iron head's that everyone on here has said have no potential what so ever.

Would I need to modify anything or are they a direct fit?
Could I use an angled plug head on an 85 or do I have to stay with the 85 straight plug style?

Thank's for any help!

I dont know about the heads but, I bought the PTLs a few years ago and the spark plug angle put the plugs real close to the exhaust. That could be a problem. It gave me an excuse to get headers.

Be very careful with those heads. From the factory, the valve jobs and guides are junk with a capital J.
An engine builder friend of mine does sell them from time to time because there is a market for them. Before allowing one to leave the shop, he does the following:
Fresh valve job
Hone guides as needed.
Deburr
Install his choice of valves, sping cups, retainers, springs, studs and guideplates etc.
Bowl blend (they are a mess just under the seat).

All of the above work, and better parts add a couple hundred dollars to the bill, but he won't sell them any other way.

Your money is better spent on a better quality head in my opinion, if the budget permits.
If the budget does not permit, I would recommend a machinist do the above, or you are pissing $650 up a rope.

A lot of builders sell these already gone through....you can try Skip White performance, he has listings on Ebay for the 210's, but he has the 190's. You need longer, hardened pushrods for the .100 over length valves. You can get a set of Edelbrock E street heads in 185 cc for 848 bucks shipped on Ebay that will probably outflow the Procomps and use regular length pushrods....this is the way I would go. I would get the non angled version, just to be sure of fitment.

I thought Skip sold the Patriots? I knew the earlier heads had issues but the latest casting was supposedly compeltely redone and made by another co.

Thanks for the "heads" up guys. I am leaning more toward the Edelbrock E streets.

With a mild cam and extrude honed intake, big runners, and exhaust would I see any gains by springing for the AFRs as opposed to the E streets?

Defintely but the budget is a good bit apart. Eddys are still a step up from stock
Maybe hit up Jim aka tpi421Vette he sells a lot of them.

He sells the Edelbrocks or the AFRs. I dont mind paying for the Afrs if there is that big of a gain.

I own and run a set of Edelbrocks. They are not a great value when compared to a performance cylinder head, in my opinion. If you are looking for a set of stock (but a little better) cylinder heads, they are not bad. However, mine did not flow near what Edelbrock claimed, and it took a ton of time in port work to achieve my goals. I have been running them for years, but my money could have been better spent elsewhere. I did go through them in 2002, so there were not alot of options back then (like there is today). This is not intended to bash Edelbrock by any means.

According to the diatribe on Skip's Procomp listings, he bailed on Patriot's due to some change in the combustion chamber that he did not like. He thinks the Procomps are making more power at this point, though I think he may still carry some Patriot's. Edelbrock claims that the E street is making 16 more HP than a "competitors oversea casting". The E street is their answer to the chinesium competition. AFR's they are not, but 850 bucks, they sound perfect for a L98. Even Patriot's are more coin. In a mag comparo against a set of lift modded Vortec's, they won handily.

He sells the afrs, yes the gain is substantial depending on how you build the rest of the package.
