1. Sick of C4 hydraulics
2. Eventually plan on running pretty big horsepower (yes I know ZF can be built to a high level but not the level of some of the heavy autos)
Seen guys put the 4l80e in the twin turbo Vipers around here. They're well north of 1100-1300 hp. I think that Heffner TT Viper that recently did a 6.74 at 199mph had one it. But don't quote me on that one.

Cool - thanks for the info. I'm sitting here looking at TCI's new "6x" tranny, looks pretty cool but $$$$ too.
You need to qualify what "best" means to you. Also, just how hard core are your drag racing plans? Will this be a strip only car? What are your power, e.t. and mph goals?
The TH400 is a farm simple transmission that nearly any skilled hot rodder can assemble and maintain. It is the hands down most cost effective drag transmission you can choose. If you go hard core and strip the car down in weight, then a Powerglide style transmission cannot be beat for efficiency.
If this will be a street/strip car then you need to figure out not only your weight, hp, e.t. and mph goals, but also what kind of street manners will be acceptable.
Let's hear some more details about how far you want to go with the car's drag setup.
Extreamautomatics has a th400 turbo that has a grinder valve body which I am running that is a P glide and a 3 speed th400.I bracket race and I come out in 2nd gear on the trans brake or in 1st gear on the brake with their trans set up and the price can't be beat.I have the low buck one at $1500.00 and I beat the crap out of it.It is the one that is good up 1300 hp.
The 4l80e would be your best trans if you want to keep the car stock but you will spend about 8k on it but that is cheap compaired to going anyother way.Believe with 2 vetts I have gone the cheap way and ended up spending that kind of money anyway tring to keep the others together.
If the budget is there I would say a Liberty trans. As to autos, guys in the 10" tire AM (all motor), and dr class including last years champ use turbo's. Thats behind a 700+in. bbc, dynod 1250 na, the car runs 8.36 @162 at 3400lbs. He also runs the car in true 10.5 with spray and same trans.
If you will be hitting it with 800 HP, a 400 is the way to go if overdrive is not a concern. If you have the cash, and need the overdrive, a 4L80E is the ticket.

All good points. For HP I would say 700-800 w/ a twin turbo setup, for e.t. I want to routinely run mid 9's - my cage is certified to 8.5 but frankly I don't want to go that fast.
Car MUST remain streetable, it will not be a drag-only car.

Thanks Pete - think I actually tried sending you a PM last night but think your inbox was full. I do need overdrive as I'll drive quite a few street/interstate/backroad miles in this car.
