I just went to install a new k&n filter in my 1990 vette. I took out the air cleaner box and down on the bottom is a plastic cover that stops the air from coming in from the bottom. should I throw it out and let the carb breath through the new hole in the bottom that the removed plastic piece has opened up???? I know it not a carb but you get the drift.
That thin, black plastic thing keeps water from being sucked into your air filter, if you drive in the rain. DON'T THROW IT AWAY. It came with the car and should go with it when you sell it.
As for your K&N filter, buy a used filter cover and cut the louvers out. Use that one on the car and keep the ORIGINAL. I used a 4" grinder with a cut-off wheel on mine. File the edges real smooth with a fine file. The cover is made of aluminum, so take your time and do a good job. My cuts were nice and straight and look like it was punched by a press. Afterward, I cleaned, sanded, primed, and painted it semi-gloss black. Turned out real nice. Looks like the General made it himself.
