Default 92 Ignition Problems?

Hi guys, I'm having a weird problem with my 92. I was having some minor idle problems a while back, and I figured it was a vacuum leak. Anyway, I parked it until I could get more into it, and it turned out to be a couple of months, during which the battery went stone dead. I put in a new battery and tried to start it, but it would not stay running. It had thrown a code 16, which I could clear. Then it would start and sit there idling for awhile, then stall. The really weird part is that when it stalled out, the tachometer needle would bounce around from 0 to 5K for a few seconds, and the fans would come on, then go off. I got it running again, and even took it for a drive with no problems, other than it smells like it's running rich.

The engine is stock, with the exception of a Dynaspark opti, installed in the latter part of 2005.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
John

Is the battery fully charged?
Did you clean the connections?

Well, it's charging now. I'll have to double-check the connections.

That has nothing to do with his problem. If you have the GM service manual, the best place to start would be the diagnostic section for error code 16.

Welcome to my world. Mine is doing this when its been hot for a while.
I have a Dynaspark that I put in 2007 ish.

One thing I've found from my research is one of the connectors or wires from the ECM to the connector could have a problem. One person reported that the connector where the opti harness connected to the wire harness on the passenger side would cut things off if he wiggled it.

Why??
Weak battery or not fully charged battery can cause all sorts of electrical issues!!

Behnevette,
What do mean it is charging now?
Was it not charging or did you just verify that it is?

My 92 idles bad from time to time, pretty sure I have a hose leaking somewhere, my 1st idle problem was caused by a bad o2, 2nd by a leaking hose and 3rd was a leaking injector that kept fouling plugs.

It was a brand new battery yesterday, and I assumed it was fully
charged, but I put it on a battery charger today. It needed a charge
apparently. I'm going to recheck the battery connections
tomorrow after work.

I live in Hunters Creek.

Never assume they are charged, bought one a few years ago and took it home and it was DOA and I was not a happy camper.

Get it fully charged and try again, also get under the car and see if you have coolant coming out of the weephole on the water pump.
These WP's are known to leak if they sit awhile. you could have coolant in the opti.

It appears that it was indeed my battery connection! The rubber boot on the positive lead had slipped upward when I connected it, and it wasn't a good solid connection. I shouldn't have forgotten one of the most important rules of troubleshooting: when something weird starts to happen, go back and check the last thing you did!

Thanks for helping me through my stupidity!
