Default Replacing 86 Rear Spring

Allright you gear heads. I'm wanting to know if I replace the rear stock spring on the 86, would the spring off a Z51 handling package work? If so - what year would be compatible? Please and thanks in advance eh!

Well, let's stir things up a bit...

The parts book only shows 2 rear springs for the '86...

85-88 Y07 H.D. Susp (FE7) 14080196 SPRING, RR (Code NYU)
86-88 Y67 14106787 SPRING, RR (Code RCA)

Not too informative, eh? (No "Z51" listing). In fact, for the years 84 - 91, there is no "Z51" rear spring listed...Or front spring either...

Price new seems to be ~$332...(For the H.D.)...

If you don't want to fork over the money, they are for sale on ebay all the time. Usually around $60. I have read that the don't sag or lose rigidity, but i can't really see how it can't fade at least some over 15 years

Rich, FE7 means the heavy duty suspension (Z51/Z07). The Code NYU spring is the Z51 57N/mm rear.

I personally wouldn't put a stiffer rear spring on, without doing something in the front to conpensate. It will physically interchange fine, but you will make the car oversteer more than before.

...Curious...The Y07 is the hatchback, and Y67 is the 'vert...Yet the hatchback gets the Z51 spring...

I've read here that the 'vert has a spring with a more pronounced arch, to compensate for the 'vert having the x-brace hang down 1 1/4" lower...

All this would seem to indicate the hatchback has a stiffer spring, while the 'vert rides higher...

...Curious...

Well, if Trixie* wants a Z51 suspension, the front spring part # is -

85-87 Y07 H.D. Susp (FE7) 14106617 SPRING, Frt (Code HMR, HLA)

I suppose Z51 shocks, sway bars, and susp bushings (if they're different) would complete the upgrade...Oh, yeah - the Z51 steering rack is a higher ratio...

Is there anything else?
