If an engine is out of balance ... like at all ...... will it be out of balance all the time, or will it be out of balance just at a certain rpm (or a set of them)?
I have been told by a couple of people that if it's out of balance .. it will be out of balance all the time and the engine will shake all the time, but more with more rpms .. and this makes sense. I'm trying to get all my facts 100% straight as to keep checking things off my list for my vibration.

not true... engines that are out of balance can exhibit many different types of vibration. it all depends on how and how much they're out of balance.
an engine that's underbalanced by a good amount will vibrate all the time, the intensity increasing with rpm. overbalancing does the opposite.
small amounts of imbalance usually show up in small rpm bands where the vibration is felt, whereas the rest of the rpm band is mostly smooth.
also, the human body is much more sensitive to certain frequencies than others. on top of that, the chassis and interior itself will have varying resonant frequencies. so the engine itself might be vibrating all the time, but it only appears to vibrate at certain frequencies.

MSR kinda nailed it, there is no "real" answer to your question. It's something like that old news clip of a bridge in the upper north west that desintegrated due to a slight breeze. There are harmonics that are inherent to all mechanical devices that may or may not be more apparent in certain circumstances.
If you have a vibe that you are trying to diagnose at certain speeds or RPM's it's going to take time to pinpoint. If you really think it's in the drivetrain, maybe a run on a dyno might help locate or help eliminate suspect components.

I know it's in the engine ... i unbolted the torque converter and it still vibrates. My builder felt around on the engine and it only shook at those certain rpms.
