Heads are off....
Here are a few pictures. Looks like there was something going on in the #1 cyl. I hope it was something in the valve train. All the plugs looked really good.

No real issues to speak off yet. I thought the banjo bolts on the back of the heads would really be a pain but they weren't. Got lucky there! I had some trouble with the lower bolts at the back but after several tries they finally broke lose. Other than that it hasn't been bad at all. Just lots of parts to remove that's all.
Got a couple of things done that were worth while though.
I got the head bolt threads in the block cleaned out.

I used this 7/16 X 14 clean out from ARP. It cleans out the gunk and doesn't hurt the threads.

These ground wires can be tough to get to. I took the opportunity to clean them up some.

Here's the story on the black #1 cyl.
When I installed my cam I had a few problems. In the process of trying to locate what they were I degreed the cam in. I had to put a weak test spring on the #1 cylinder. I also had to remove the Patriot spring base to do this and install a regular spring base. That meant removing the valve seal. Yep, you got it.....I forgot to put the valve seal back on so oil was coming in the chamber pretty good.
It scared me pretty good for a while. Thought maybe a broken ring. Pete K was a really big help with this. He's helped me out so many times I've lost count. Thanks again Pete!
You can see here how black the exhaust valve is at the base.

It looks like your going first this time.
I havent ordered my heads yet. I'll be watching this pretty good. I remember reading your going with AFR's. Will this be pretty much a bolt on job or what? What springs and valve train hardware are you are using?

I upgraded from the base 8017 to the 8019 springs. Chamber size is 58cc.
AFR said it would cost more to use 7/16 rocker studs so they are sending them with 3/8. I just have to replace them with my 7/16. If I have to change guide plates I will. Other than these two things they are out of the box 195 Street Eliminators. I'm using ARP head bolts #134-3701. Head gaskets are Victor Reinz .026 #5898. I had a LT1 intake ported but after comparing the AFR 6860 gasket that is recommended to the gasket that was used for the porting I decided to go ahead and order a Edelbrock LT4 Air Gap manifold. Tony Mamo at AFR said it would work better than the LT1 intake if ported to their 6860 gasket. I know the Air Gap itself doesn't improve performance that much itself. The reason I'm using it is because it was fast to get rather than hunting down a GM LT4 intake. There is more meat at the top of the ports to port to their gasket than a LT1 intake has. That is the reason.
I'm also changing valve covers just because I want to not because I have to. These are something new Canton has come out with. I may have to do a little engineering on them for the PCV tube that goes from the right hand cover to the tb. Can't really tell if that hole is there or not. I think they will work/look pretty good.
Hope all of this helps a little bit, Mike

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I disassembled them completely for inspection (as I do on any new cylinder head).
Very impressed. Valve seat runout was the best I have ever seen on a mass produced casting.
Spring heights were near perfect.
A quick clean up, and minor deburring, should be all they need.
Hats off to AFR.

Glad to know you finally found the SNAFU

You shouldn't have such good prices on these heads!
