Today I started to install the Bosch III injector kit for my 85 L98 (purchased from Jon at FIC). I started at about 9am, had everything taken apart by noon. Took an hour for lunch, worked till 5pm and still not done. This is some project. I did hit some snags along the way however. Everything went fine until it was time to remove the fuel rail, I kept the runners on. The fuel rail would not come off! I had to use some blocks of wood and a crowbar attached to the rail with string to pry them up. Not really what I expected. Also, I broke an injector plug while unpluging it . Finally, the kit that I purchased had a bunch of o-rings but the ones for the fuel rail are not the right size, anyone else encounter this? So, day 1 down and still not finished. All thats left is rebuild though and I cant wait to see the results! Tell me Im not the only one having a hard time with this project and that its worth the trouble?
Just had to share my story, a little dissapointed that its not done yet.

Yeah, it's a big job for sure. I replaced mine with some SMP injectors a few weeks ago. I had things back together by the end of the day but I broke one of the injector retainers when I was removing it so it really should come apart again to replace that. Grrr....
I bought my injectors from Racetronics and they fit perfectly.

Hi Jon, thanks for your concern. Also, A+ job on your shipping speed! I finally got around to installing the injectors I bought months ago for my 85. Anyways, maybe its just me but none of the o-rings in the kit properly fit the fuel lines to and from the rail There were o-rings for the rails that fit fine. Then I had a few small ones and one large one, however none seemed to fit the lines. Maybe they were replaced at some point in time. Other than that is was just some inexperience with the job that slowed me down. I have all the injectors installed in the manifold and the drivers side rail is on. I think Im on the home stretch!

the o ring kit contains o rings for the crossover tubes and the cold start valve and feed line for the CSV, not the fuel inlet or the return
on mine the o rings where fine. You have to be carefull and remind everyone that the o rings to the rail when not using the c clips have to be flush before you wrench them, otherwise you can pinch them and get leaks. I made sure I set them nice before I hit them with the wrench. I could see how easily that can happen if they are not seated well enough before wrenching
When it is all said and done Im sure your gonna love it. Make sure to clean all that carbon off also while your in there
I did mine a little over a week ago. I did end up taking the runners off after I had the injectors out because I could see where they had been leaking. It's easier if you remove the EGR valve if you're not taking the runners off.
Thanks for the claification Jon. I thought I lost it or was going crazy. Hopefully withing the next few days Ill have the time and cooperative weather to finish.

Hi Mike, what you mean with have to be flush ?
Thanks !

Ok to clarify
I noticed that when I was laying down the fuel rail on top of the injectors ( as it is instructed to do when you are not using the c clips ) and I had it on top of them my initial impulse was to grab the 10 mill and start tightening them down. What I noticed when I looked closely was that some of the o rings where snug into the female part of the fuel rail while others although they looked ready to be tightened down werent. Had I wrenched them without looking more closley I would have pinched the fuel rail and probably pinched the o ring also which would have resulted in a leak Im sure. I read about someone doing this and having leaks
Basically just make sure they are all even ( the orings going into the fuel rail on both sides before tightening it down. This is simply to avoid pinching the o ring on the sharp edges of the rail thereby preventing any potential leaks. If I left anything out or there is more clarification needed let me know and also one last note. Make sure to pressurize the system before you put the runners and tpiu back together to check for leaks once you have the rail put in. This will save a big headach later if you put it all together and find you have a leak
The first time is the most difficult. But the second time is a piece of cake. Last year I replaced my injectors, 2 evenings (6 hours) to get it done. This spring 2 hours to remove a mouse nest under the plenum.

Mice underneath the plenum . Its really pretty straight forward to change injectors, its just hard getting to them! I think tomorrow evening Ill be finishing them up though and hopefully it will be worth it.
Well day 2 down and still not done. Went out this evening and worked at putting the fuel rail all back together. Pressure tested the system before the complete rebuild and....a leak. I believe its the closest injector to the passenger that is leaking. Maybe I rolled an o-ring or something. So, now I have to take it apart again, lose about another gallon of gas, and try again. Hopefully the next work session will get everything all squared away.
Im now wondering if I should change the FPR out while Im already there. Is this readily available at a local auto parts store? About how much is one going to cost? Hard to replace?
Yes I did, not really sure what happened. Maybe I just did't line up the rail correctly when I was putting it back on.
Maybe Jon could chime in but what we have to avoid here
is to be careful not to "bite" the orings with the razor edge of the rails
so what about start the 8 injectors carefully into the rail , just a bit not all the way inside, then superpose the rail into the manifold and pull the injectors down enough to the manifold. i hope i explain myself.
im not sure if it works,i bit a couple of orings sometimes trying to perfectly align all 8 and make them into the rail , but the edge cut them a bit , enough to leak
