So I have a 1996 LT4. From what I know it has a mild cam in the car. Stock everything else. I've been thinking about some of the mods I want to do. I think what I should start with is a short throw shifter, headers, x-pipe, no cats, and a cat back. The thing drones right now so I need a cat back that will help that. That's the game plan so far. So any advice on parts or a different way to go. Any thing I need to know about these cars. Thanks for the help.

First develop a plan. Decide on what you want to accomplish. Then factor in your budget and how much of the work you can do, yourself.
Since the PCM depends so heavily on feed-back from the CATs, eliminating the CATs isn't something I would even consider doing. I'd DEFINITELY keep them.
